The Orphanage
Back in 1996, Maria and Pilar, the
founding sisters of Amantani Peru, were staying on Amantani, an island
in Lake Titicaca, when they had the idea of opening an orphanage for
vulnerable and abandoned children. Amantani means ‘Land of Tranquillity’
which fitted their vision beautifully.
Since 1997, Maria and Pilar have managed an orphanage project in Cusco,
which has now helped over 800 vulnerable children. Their principal
orphanage is for babies who are being cared for with the hope that one
day they will be adopted. Alongside this, they run three smaller homes
for older children who are now unlikely to find adoptive parents. The
environment that they have managed to create for these children is
unbelievable – and so is the tailored care that they offer each child.
