Floods Hit Cusco - 4th February 2010

Late last month, there was severe flooding in the Cusco region. Although the majority of the media has focused on the tourists stranded at Machu Pichu, they have largely failed to report on the 3,000 homes that were destroyed following an onslaught of torrential rain. People have been without shelter, food, warmth and water, and many have faced a constant battle to avoid their houses being swallowed by the flooding rivers. Finally, the rains seem to be stopping and these people can now begin to rebuild their homes and lives.
Luckily, Amantani's projects were not directly affected. We have done everything in our power to help the areas and people worse hit by the flooding. It's holiday time at our boarding school project and Amantani personnel have channelled their efforts and resources to build temporary tents made from plastic sheeting, as well as providing blankets, sleeping mats, food and clean drinking water.
The district of Ccorca has been less severely damaged. They were however not without their problems. The rains have destroyed many crop fields as well as causing dangerous landslides which blocked roads and access to several communities.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS.
